BC Reads and Feeds event coming up

Apr 28, 2023 | 1:31 PM

PRESS RELEASE

BC Reads & Feeds will have its annual fundraiser, Walk a Mile in Their Shoes, on Saturday, May 13 at 8 a.m. Pre-registration begin at 7:30 a.m.  Participants will start the walk at the Veterans Memorial Wall on the corner of S. Race Street and S. Public Square, and the walk will end at First Christian Church at 1100 N. Race Street.

Though optional, participants are encouraged not eat dinner on the night before the event or breakfast on the day of the event to simulate the hunger felt by so many.  Then, participants will be asked to walk a mile to First Christian Church, where free yogurt parfaits will be provided to all participants.

This program is designed to eliminate hunger in the summer months when food can be scarce since children are not in school getting the benefits of free breakfast and lunch.  In addition to having open cafeterias throughout Barren County, two busses and three vans travel to over 35 different locations to deliver breakfast, lunch, and free books for children of all ages.

Sponsored through the National Summer Feeding Program, the breakfast and lunch served to children under 18 is free. The family meal kits delivered on Fridays in big red bags, the bus, the books, and the sports and recreation equipment given to children at no charge are part of a larger community effort.
