Robert Michael Benedict
Robert Michael Benedict, lovingly known as Michael, 52, of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, passed away on November 1, 2026, following a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Raised in Glasgow, Kentucky, Michael was the beloved son of the late Sonny and Gloria Benedict. He leaves behind his cherished daughter, Emily, who was the absolute light of his life; his former wife and lifelong friend, Jennifer, with whom he shared the greatest gift of raising Emily; loving aunts, cousins, and extended family; and countless friends who, over the years, became family.
Michael was truly one of a kind. Funny, witty, occasionally stubborn, incredibly intelligent, and endlessly generous with his time and heart, he had a rare gift for making people feel special. He could strike up a conversation with just about anyone and somehow make them feel like they’d been best friends for years. To so many people, that is exactly what he became.
His childhood was filled with the kind of adventures and friendships that stay with you forever. From GI Joe battles and dirt bikes to backyard football games, sledding, and Fourth of July fireworks that seemed to last until midnight, Michael knew how to make memories and enjoy every moment. His love of music started early, with concerts that sparked a lifelong passion for live music. He even took up drumming, impressing his friends with his ability to play his favorite rock songs from memory.
Michael dedicated 27 years of his professional life to Information Technology at Crestview Aerospace. But he never let work define him. He believed life was meant to be lived, experienced, and enjoyed. He loved traveling, discovering new places, trying new foods, attending concerts, and cheering on his beloved San Francisco 49ers. He had an incredible memory for sports statistics, music, and just about any piece of trivia you could imagine. There was rarely a subject he couldn’t contribute something to. Whether it was the latest Gov’t Mule concert, a sporting event, a favorite song, or the next trip on the horizon, Michael always had something to look forward to.
Above everything else, Michael’s greatest role in life was being Emily’s dad. She was his greatest joy, his proudest accomplishment, and the person who held his heart more than anyone else. The two shared countless adventures, from traveling to ball games to amusement parks, roller coasters, and always finding the next fun experience. He treasured every opportunity to make memories with her, and nothing made him happier than seeing her smile.
Although Michael and Jennifer eventually went their separate ways, they maintained a close friendship and a shared commitment to giving Emily a life filled with love, laughter, support, and unforgettable memories. Their bond was a reflection of what mattered most for their child.
Michael’s friendships were another extraordinary part of his life. Through every stage and every chapter, he surrounded himself with people who became so much more than friends. He was the person who was always up for an adventure, who remembered the stories, who could make you laugh when you needed it most, and who made you feel like you mattered. The outpouring of love, stories, and memories being shared by so many is perhaps the greatest reflection of the life he lived. He didn’t simply pass through people’s lives; he left a lasting mark on them.
He lived with an appreciation for the little things, an appetite for adventure, a passion for music, and a heart big enough to make room for everyone. He was never afraid to laugh, explore, try something new, or make a memory. While his time here was far too short, the friendships he built, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will continue to live on in the people fortunate enough to have known him.
Michael will be missed more than words can express. But for those who loved him, he will never be far away. He will live on in the stories told, the songs played, the concerts attended, the adventures remembered, and the countless moments when someone finds themselves smiling because something reminds them of him.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Michael’s memory by scheduling a colonoscopy or encouraging someone you love to do the same. His battle with cancer is a heartbreaking reminder of how important early detection and routine screening can be. Earlier screening may have given Michael more precious time with the people he loved. If sharing his story encourages even one person to get screened, that one decision could spare another family the heartbreak of losing someone they love. It would be a meaningful way to honor his life and perhaps give someone else more time to make memories of their own.
Due to the holiday season approaching, a celebration of Michael’s life will be held on January 16th, 2027, at the Pallet Bar and Grill from 1 to 4 p.m. in Fort Walton Beach. A second service will be announced for his hometown in Kentucky at a later date.
Until we meet again, Michael, save us a seat at the next concert. We love you!
