The Barren County Family YMCA is expanding its capacity and utility of its childcare program.
“This space would be dedicated space for our childcare. Right now they’re using a space that is dedicated to our youth gym, because of that we are not able to use that space for other programs,” said Tara Bailey, CEO of the Barren County YMCA. “Right now we have temporary walls set up, but with the expansion they will now have a permanent home for our camp kids.”
“With this extra space, we would also be able to expand our licensing through the state to be able to take in more children,” Bailey continued. “Right now we are licensed for 140 children, which our current camp has already reached, with a waiting list. So this addition would be a huge benefit, not just to us and our campers, but also families in the community.”
Funding for the new addition came from a Community Development Project Grant through the state.
“We depend 100 percent on state, federal or foundation grants as well as local donors to expand and serve more in the community,” Bailey said. “The expansion will be state-of-the-art much like a school set up, with more updated security measures for the children and staff.”
The 6,700 square foot expansion will at least triple the size of the space currently being used. It will be composed of five classrooms, each with its own bathroom and “accordion” walls allowing for more or less space as needed.
Scott, Murphy and Daniel is in charge of the construction.
“The project has ran incredibly smooth,” said Tim Gupton, the site supervisor. “We are hoping to finish in six weeks.”
