Glasgow City Creamery officially celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting event at its store on the Square in downtown Glasgow today, June 23.

“I never thought in a million years I was going to own an ice cream shop with my wife and kids but here we are and it’s not going anywhere, we’ll be here for a while,” Andrew Hubbell, owner of Glasgow City Creamery, said.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was attended by Glasgow Mayor Henry Royse and several city council members along with members from the Barren County Chamber of Commerce. Royse expressed his excitement for the new business saying it will positively impact the city.

“This is a very exciting event for downtown Glasgow,” Royse said. “It’s exciting to see this much enthusiasm as we cut the ribbon today. It’s clear they went all out, spent lots of time building the fixtures [and] getting good quality merchandise including good quality help and I think this is going to be a continual brightspot right here in downtown Glasgow.”

The Creamery had a soft opening last week selling ice cream and Zinger drinks to show appreciation for all the help required to make the store a reality.

Hubbell said they had originally planned to close around 5 p.m. that Thursday but the steady stream of customers made them stay open for three more hours to ensure “nobody got turned away.”

“We did a soft opening on Thursday just to thank everyone who helped put this together,” Hubbell said. “It went really well. We ended up bringing a lot of people off the streets and it was awesome.”

Hubbell, originally from Indiana, said his family would often come to Glasgow for the summer, because of that he said “it means everything” to finally have his own shop in downtown Glasgow, a place that always “felt like home” for him.

“It means everything,” Hubbell said. “It’s huge to us, and my family, it’s just crazy to think that growing up as a kid and traveling here I would own something on the Square. To us that’s huge.”

Looking into the future, Hubbell said they have some plans in the works and that their work was not over yet.

“We’re not done,” Hubbell said. “We’ve got some other ideas that we’re going to try to put here on the Square and in Glasgow in general so this is just the beginning.”

From 2 until 4 p.m. Nash 103.7, a fellow member of Commonwealth Broadcasting company, will be at the Creamery conducting interviews.
