South Green Elementary School, one of two elementary schools within the Glasgow Independent Schools system, returned from the National Beta Convention after receiving a slew of individual awards and placing fourth at both Songfest and in group talent.

According to Mary Bruce Hardiman, SGE kindergarten teacher and 7-year Beta sponsor, this is the first year the school has competed in both Songfest and the group talent.

The theme of the conference, according to Hardiman, was “the power of Beta” so for Songfest they changed the words to the Addams Family theme song to match. For the group talent the children performed roughly 3 minutes from their performance of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the play SGE performed this year.

Three students won individual awards. Reid Crawford placed sixth in the social studies test section, Brinleigh Mackie was seventh for mixed media art and Harlow Bale finished ninth in instrumentals.

Hardiman said, while it’s nice to place in the Top 10, the students had fun just competing at the convention.

“Obviously it’s nice to win,” Hardiman said. “But those kids just enjoyed being up there.”

In total, Hardiman said, there were 30 children, all from fourth and fifth grade at the school, who made the trip to Louisville.
