FLASHBACK FRIDAY: The first bakeries and groceries of Glasgow

The first bakery and confectionery established in Glasgow was done so by a German immigrant from Burkesville named Henry Raubold.  It was called H. Raubold’s Confectionary and Bakery.  It was established on the east side of the Glasgow Public Square in 1869. The second confectionery was opened by another German immigrant, Adolph  Rapp. He opened the establishment when he moved a Glasgow from Louisville in 1870.
Raubold was described as a “popular confectioner”, and the business quickly expanded.

An advertisement in the Glasgow Weekly Times from 1898 reveals many things about the confectionary and bakery.
“To be found is all that is nice and fresh” was the headline. Candies, fruits, nuts, cakes, jellies, baking powders, and canned goods were amongst the list of offerings. Fresh bread was baked daily. According to the advertisement, a “splendid restaurant” was attached to the bakery, that offered “good meals” for just $.25 a day.

According to an 1878 article in the Glasgow Weekly Times, there were two confectioners, and four grocery stores in the county. By the early 1900s, there were considerably more. In 1920 the Grinstead Bakery and Grocery was established on the east side of the square in Glasgow.

The Barren County Grocery and Hardware was located on E. Washington St., and Davidson Bros. Wholesale Grocery warehouse, was also established in the 1920s. It was known as the largest wholesale grocery business in the region.

The Davidson Wholesale Grociers was the largest distribution center in the region.

The early 1900s prior to the great depression saw a tremendous amount of growth in Glasgow. It was written in the Glasgow Weekly Times that Glasgow was a “cradle of wealth” and that “commercial mart and capital was part of the great and favored county of Barren”.
It was during that same era that the first Houchens store was opened south of Glasgow. It was operated by Ervin G. Houchens on his father’s farm in a very small building. Ervin was the founder of Houchens Groceries. By the 1980s, there were numerous Houchens stores in Glasgow.
