The Barren River Area Development District is hosting its first Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy Summit in the form of a free, five-hour training later this month that could be of interest to a variety of local leaders.
The event takes place from 9:15 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Jan. 31 at the Cave City Convention Center. Preregistration at https://bit.ly/CEDS_Summit23 is requested by 4 p.m. Jan. 24.
The summit is geared toward local elected officials, including city council/commission and fiscal court members, economic and industrial development representatives, tourism commissions, emergency managers, steering committee members, planning commission members, and other local stakeholders and interested community members from within the entire 10-county BRADD service area.
After registration and initial comments from the Eric Sexton, BRADD’s executive director, two half-hour breakout sessions will ensue, with each allowing attendees to choose one of four topics that is of the most interest. Two more breakout sessions are planned for the afternoon, following lunch and a keynote speaker: Jeff Noel, secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development.

Planned topics include: general information about BRADD; transit funding and operational support; workforce development; housing development in Kentucky; introduction to Kentucky League of Cities, Kentucky Association of Counties and Kentucky County Judge-Executive Association; mapping critical infrastructure; Main Street and placemaking; planning and zoning overview; community media relations; emergency services grant resources; and a transportation overview.
Emily Hathcock, associate director of planning and development for the Barren River Area Development District, attended Monday’s Glasgow Common Council meeting to discuss the training opportunity. She said it is meant take the place of what was formerly presented as a training for newly elected officials. In a follow-up conversation Tuesday with Glasgow News 1, she shared who the scheduled keynote speaker is. She added that she had updated some of the information that is online at planning.bradd.org/ceds-summit about the event.
She also mentioned that BRADD is offering four free trainings related to emergency management at the BRADD office is Bowling Green – two in January and two in February. The first pair are focused on disaster preparedness and the latter pair are about cybersecurity, she said.
