Dustin Ty Young
Kentucky State Police arrested a Barren County deputy jailer Wednesday who is accused of taking money that belonged to an inmate.
Dustin Ty Young, 25, of Edmonton is charged with theft by unlawful taking or disposition, more than $1,000 but less than $10,000, according to the arrest citation. The Barren County Detention Center website shows that Young was booked into the facility but then released, with a court date set for Feb. 13. The Warren County Regional Jail website shows that he was booked in there about an hour later, with no bond set yet.
The citation states that the investigator, Trooper Jonathan McChesney, was asked on Tuesday to look into a potential theft of money from an inmate at the facility in Glasgow. He learned that the inmate had been arrested Jan. 30 after a chase that ended in Metcalfe County and was booked in by Young and placed in a holding cell around midnight or the early morning hours of Jan. 31.
“Video surveillance at the jail shows Deputy Dustin Young retrieving a wallet from [the inmate’s] property and taking money from it,” the citation states.
When the investigator interviewed Young on Wednesday, “he admitted to taking $1,500 from [the inmate’s] wallet out of his property bag at the jail. He further admitted he used the money to pay some bills and buy a firearm.”
Young has worked at the jail since June 2021.
