The Barren County Board of Education with its five members and Superintendent Bo Matthews are scheduled to meet Thursday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. for their monthly meeting. Among the numerous items featured in the three-page agenda is the recognition of 2024 retirees, approve new positions and approve the 2024-2025 tentative budget.

As is typical of board meetings the first item set to be addressed is recognitions. Usually, the district chooses a classified staff, certified staff and a student from a particular school within the district to highlight, but this meeting’s recognitions will be focused on honoring this school year’s retirees.

In total, seventeen school and district personnel are scheduled to be recognized, according to the agenda. Among them are a few expected retirees like Cynthia York, director of special programs, who announced her retirement at the April 19 meeting, and Superintendent Bo Matthews, but there others that were hitherto unknown. The others are:

Barren County High School – Sharon Young, Josephy Jay Turner, Todd Steenbergen and Roger Reece.
Barren County Middle School – Monisa Philbeck
BAVEL – Jeanelle McGuire
Barren County District – Melissa Moss and Valerie Stokes
Eastern/Hiseville Elementary – Sonia Eaton
North Jackson Elementary – Jerry London and Tina Sharp
Park City Elementary – Dondi Meredith and Brenda Taylor
Red Cross Elementary – Cheri Cumberland
Transportation Department – Terry Thompson

Also on the agenda is a plethora of positions that require approval. In total there are 19 positions to be put before the board on May 9. Most all deal with Barren Beyond the Bell, Little Learners or after school positions.

The agenda also includes the approval of the next school year’s tentative budget, approval of for bid and three contracts, and improvements to the soccer field by the central office.
