Med Center Health personnel joined Hart County elected officials and employees of the Medical Center of Caverna to celebrate a decade of the health care provider’s presence in the community.

The event marked 10 years since Med Center Health entered into a partnership with what had been an independent hospital in Horse Cave.

The partnership has significantly expanded the services available locally, Alan Alexander, vice president administrator at Caverna, said during an interview. According to Alexander, patients in the area now have access to treatments such as chemotherapy that once required at least a 45-minute drive, adding that keeping those services close to home makes care more convenient for patients and their families.

“The partnership with Med Center Health has been essential for this community,” Alexander said. “Without Med Center Health this facility would’ve struggled to survive as an independent facility. With Med Center Health we’ve not only survived, but we’ve thrived. We’ve added lots of services: chemotherapy, outpatient rehab services — that we offer only because of Med Center Health — physical therapy, occupational therapy [and] speech therapy.”

“Time is the most precious resource people have, so if you can save people travel time [and] having the services [they] need close to home means everything,” he added.

Horse Cave Mayor Randall Curry described the partnership as a win-win for the community, saying that the Medical Center of Caverna provides not only improved access to health care but also economic benefits, as the hospital has employed more than 100 people during its decade of service.

“The impact that the Med Center has had on this community is outstanding,” Curry said.
