One man is facing charges after an argument inside an SUV led to a collision near Barren River Lake.
Allen County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 10000 block of U.S. 31-E for a two-vehicle collision with possible injuries, according to a police citation. The collision in front of Rusty’s Lakeside Pub Thursday afternoon was near the Barren and Allen county line. The crash caused traffic to back up along the roadway into Barren County.
When they arrived, authorities found a commercial vehicle off the right shoulder of the road with severe front end damage. An SUV involved in the crash had overturned and was resting about 100 feet away. Two occupants of the SUV were lying on the ground nearby.
The female driver suffered severe injuries from the collision, according to the citation. The driver told deputies a male passenger had “jerked the wheel.” The passenger was identified by deputies as 35-year-old Daniel Wilson of Westmoreland, Tennessee. Wilson was unable to provide what deputies described as a consistent account of the events leading up to the crash. He acknowledged there was a verbal argument before the wreck and said he was unsure if he had jerked the steering wheel.
Video surveillance from the nearby restaurant footage showed the commercial vehicle traveling southbound and the SUV heading northbound when the SUV suddenly swerved, according to the citation. The commercial vehicle then struck the SUV.
A witness at the scene said that Wilson said he had jerked the wheel out of the driver’s hand and that he “didn’t mean to.”
Wilson was arrested and charged with first-degree assault, domestic violence, and first-degree wanton endangerment. Wilson remained in the Allen County Detention Center on Friday afternoon. The condition of the female driver was not immediately available. No additional information on the driver’s identity or the commercial vehicle operator was released in the citation.
