When Brooke Weir partnered with Samantha Wilson last year for the inaugural Rise & Respond Awards, she did not know she would need those responders this year.

Weir gave a tearful hug to Barren-Metcalfe Emergency Medical Services team members Friday morning as she gave them special medals. Those team members — Megan Scott and Jonathan Muse — helped her in March when she had a medical crisis.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” Weir said. “I had been having some problems with anxiety, but I thought I was having a heart attack, my arm went numb, so I just pulled over and they came.”

She learned once Scott and Muse were there that she was having a panic attack. She said they helped her to calm down, and she was able to go home without more extensive medical treatment.

“They checked all my vitals and once they did they said, ‘I don’t think she needs to go to a hospital,” Weir said.

Friday morning during the second annual Rise & Respond Awards, Weir presented Muse and Scott with special medals. The awards ceremony recognizes emergency medical services personnel.

Weir said she was asked by Wilson with Atlantic Bay Mortgage Group to help sponsor the first awards event. She said she thought then that it was a good cause, and so she did help sponsor the event. Weir is co-owner of Home Towne Settlement Services.

“So I did it last year not knowing how it would impact me this year,” Weir said Friday morning. “Even if I never do another event ever, I will always do this one.”

A full list of awards will be published in a separate story.
