The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Barren County from Thursday afternoon through late Saturday night, warning that heavy rain from repeated storms could lead to flash flooding.

Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected late in the week and through the weekend across the area. Those storms are capable of producing heavy rain that may fall over the same locations multiple times, according to the weather service.

The weather service said excessive runoff from that rain could result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. They also warn that creeks and streams may rise out of their banks if enough rain falls over a short period of time.

The agency notes that some areas already have wet soil, which can make flooding more likely with each additional round of rainfall. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to stay aware of changing conditions and be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding develops. Drivers are also urged to use caution and avoid driving through water-covered roads, as flooding may be difficult to judge, especially at night.
