The Hart County Animal Shelter is still recovering from a tornado that struck the Rowletts area of Hart County last week.
Wendy Giles said the post-storm assessment revealed that the roof of the building nearly blew off. She said they initially thought the building had suffered only minor damage, but that now the roof requires repairs.
Despite the damage, only two dogs escaped on the day of the tornado, and all of the other animals reportedly remained at the shelter.
The damage has created new challenges because the animal shelter does not have enough indoor space to house most of its dogs. As a result, Giles said the greatest need right now is for sun shades to cover outdoor kennels so dogs can be protected while they remain outside.
The shelter is also asking for donations of canned dog food, tarps and dog houses to help care for the animals.
Donations can be delivered to the shelter at 2160 S. Dixie Highway, Munfordville.
