Glasgow Independent Schools are preparing to host a free clothing giveaway to help families get ready for the new school year.
Youth Services Center coordinators say the district-wide event is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 6, at Glasgow Middle School.
According to Tina Cook, the Youth Services Center coordinator at Glasgow Middle School, and Autumn Hardin, the coordinator at Glasgow High School, the giveaway is a collaboration among Highland, South Green, Glasgow High School and Glasgow Middle School.
They said the event is open to any student in the Glasgow Independent School District.
Cook and Hardin said the schools also serve entire families at the giveaway, providing clothing from babies all the way to adults, and they do not turn anyone away.
The coordinators said this is the fourth year for the district-wide effort, and it has grown each year as more families take part.
They said many families now look forward to the clothing drive as they prepare to go back to school and work to make sure their students have what they need.
Much of the clothing comes from donations made by faculty and staff members who save items throughout the year, according to Cook and Hardin.
They said churches and other members of the community also contribute once they hear about the event and want to support local families.
Organizers describe the giveaway as a chance for the district and community to reach out to families during what can be a financially difficult back-to-school season.
