Farmers RECC is directing seven thousand dollars to local programs that work to end hunger among students in Barren, Hart and Metcalfe counties.
The cooperative said the donations are going to Backpack programs and to the Barren County Reads and Feeds initiative to help children who may not have enough to eat when school is out.
According to Farmers RECC, two thousand dollars each is being donated to the Backpack programs serving Barren, Hart and Metcalfe counties.
Those programs, organized by Feeding America, provide children with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food they can eat on weekends when they are not receiving school meals.
Bags of food are assembled at area food banks, then distributed to students through each school’s Youth Resource Office.
Farmers RECC officials say the funding has already been distributed to those Youth Resource Offices so staff can identify students and families with the greatest need.
The cooperative estimates that approximately one hundred twenty dollars will feed a student on weekends for an entire school year through the Backpack program.
In addition to the Backpack efforts, Farmers RECC has donated one thousand dollars to the Barren County Reads and Feeds program.
That program provides food to local students who are dealing with food insecurity, adding another layer of support beyond school meal programs.
Caralyne Pennington, director of member and public communications at Farmers RECC, said hunger is a very real problem for some area students.
Pennington said that if the cooperative can help those students and the public with that problem, it is important to do what they can.
She added that these donations are a tangible way for Farmers RECC to live out the cooperative principle of concern for community.
Pennington noted that Farmers RECC employees live and work in the same communities they serve, and that giving back through hunger relief is one way to support those neighbors.
