The TJ Community Mission Foundation is turning back the clock with an “Awesome 80s” fundraiser on Aug. 22 at the Cave Area Conference Center in Cave City.
“The very first capital project that the foundation did was the fundraising campaign to build Shanti Niketan Hospice Home, and so for the first several years in the life of the foundation they would do big annual gala type events,” explained Randy Burns, mission foundation executive director. “The very first one … was an event called Glasgow Under the Stars and then there was an event called Denim and Diamonds and then the third one was a 70s themed event called Peace, Love and a Beetle Bug.”
Burns said the foundation did not have a gala event last year because the calendar of events was too full. He said they worked with the marketing department at T.J. Regional Health to come up with this year’s gala.
The “Awesome 80s” event will run throughout the evening with a full schedule of themed activities.
A “Happening Happy Hour” is planned from 5 to 6 p.m., with arcade games and a cash bar open as guests arrive.
From 6 to 6:15 p.m., the program calls for a welcome segment titled “Greetings, Party People!” followed by a “Totally Tasty Dinner” from 6:15 to 7 p.m.
At 7 p.m., the foundation plans a brief update called “The Foundation Lowdown” to share information about its work and impact.
A live auction, billed as “The Bid is Right!” is scheduled from 7:15 to 8 p.m.
From 8 to 10 p.m., guests can “Rock Out & Game On” with live music, arcade action and more 80s-themed fun.
Live music for the night will be provided by Rubik’s Groove, an 80s party band that performs hit songs from the decade.
The evening will also feature an arcade area with classic games, music trivia, 80s pop culture trivia and other contests.
Guests are encouraged to embrace the theme by teasing their hair, pulling out bright neon and leg warmers, and dressing in 80s-inspired outfits or as favorite characters from the decade.
Tickets are $75 and include dinner, entertainment and access to the evening’s activities.
All proceeds from the gala will benefit TJ Mission Foundation programs that focus on health and wellness in Barren County and across south-central Kentucky.
