Bomb squad members safely detonated what police say was an active tank shell found in a Cave City apartment after the resident called 911 with concerns about the device.
Cave City Chief of Police Paul Reynolds said the call came in around 10:15 a.m. Monday, Sept. 21, from a resident at Glenwood Apartments who reported having a tank shell in their unit.
The caller told police they purchased the shell about a year ago and had kept it in their apartment, according to Reynolds.
Reynolds said the resident recently grew concerned the shell might be real and still active, and decided to contact authorities rather than keep it in the apartment any longer.
Officers who responded to the scene took photographs of the device and sent them to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for review.
ATF agents then directed them to contact a bomb squad to safely dispose of the potential explosive, according to Reynolds.
The bomb squad responded, removed the tank shell from the apartment and transported it to an undisclosed farm in the area.
The shell was then safely detonated in a controlled environment away from homes and businesses.
Reynolds said this is the first time in his career he has dealt with an incident involving an active tank shell found in a local apartment.
