When Adeline Coleman is not running cross country, playing varsity soccer, or being a senior at Barren County High School, she serves as the president of the school’s FFA chapter.
Adeline said when she was a freshman her sister, Abigail, who is two years older, told her she would enjoy being in FFA. It’s also a family tradition.
“My father was in FFA, his father was in FFA,” Adeline said while participating in an Ag Education Week event at Red Cross Elementary. “[Abigail] just kind of pulled me in … and I remember my first event and my first ag class, and I just fell in love with it.”
“I love the atmosphere, I love the people and I love our advisors,” Adeline said.
She was at Red Cross helping manage the petting zoo, which allowed elementary students get a close-up view of farm animals such as horses and pigs.
It was her second day of visiting a Barren County elementary school and teaching children about agriculture in the county. The school district celebrated the week by having events at the schools in the district that highlighted different elements of agriculture, and the jobs associated with the field.
That celebration wraps Monday with events at Eastern, Temple Hill and Hiseville schools.
Adeline said anytime she can participate in programs at the elementary schools, she does.
“It’s really cool to show them these things and teach them these things,” she said, especially teaching children about the animals.
“It seems normal for us. We see these animals on a daily or weekly basis, but it opens your eyes and it makes you realize some kids will only see a horse once or twice a year,” Adeline said. “We have horses and pigs, and just seeing their faces light up when they see these animals is great.”
