On the night that would have been Trooper Hayden Phillips’ 29th birthday, more than a thousand people gathered at Jackie Browning Park to celebrate his life, and cheer for his family.
Phillips was killed in the line of duty Monday, Sept. 28, while making a traffic stop along Interstate 65 near Smiths Grove. The man charged in the crime is in jail in Warren County awaiting a court hearing Friday.
While those were the facts that brought people to Jackie Browning on Wednesday night, that was not why they were there. They were there to honor Phillips, and to cheer on two of his children as they played baseball.
Along with the usual crowd of parents, grandparents and siblings who would be at a baseball game rooting for their loved ones, there were law enforcement and emergency personnel from several agencies throughout the area. They were there to show support for Phillips’ family, and, as Marcus Thurman wrote, … “reminding them that they do not walk this road alone.”
Below are a few photos from the on-field action in two games in which Phillips’ children played Wednesday.
