Crossland Community Church in Glasgow will host First Responders Day on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. with a free lunch provided by Slack’s Barbecue, organizers said. The event will take place at the church at 217 S L Rogers Wells Boulevard.
John “Slack” Allen, owner of Slack’s Barbecue, said Ross Anglen, the church’s Glasgow campus pastor, set up the event. Allen said he loves having the opportunity to give back to first responders.
The menu will include pulled pork, pulled chicken, shoulder, cookies, cupcakes, mac and cheese and more. Clark Distributing will be providing Coke for the event, according to Crossland Glasgow campus Pastor Ross Anglen.
Anglen said the church had been looking to organize an event like this for some time. The death of state trooper Hayden Phillips on September 28 gave the church a push to put the gathering together, he said.
Anglen said Crossland has long had a deep love for first responders and people who put their lives on the line to serve their community. He said organizers hope the lunch will provide a bright spot during a difficult time.
The pastor said he wanted to get the word out so first responders could come and be served for a day, recognizing the service and sacrifices they make for their communities.
For Allen, the meal is an opportunity to give back through a business that started about four years ago with a grill and a tent. Slack’s expanded into a trailer about two years ago, according to Allen.
