Park City residents have a couple of new ways to get outside and play following the opening of the city’s new pickleball and bocce courts at Bell’s Tavern Park.

The courts were formally opened during Park City’s America 250 celebration Sept. 26, marking the completion of a recreation project that has been in the works for several years.

Mayor Donna Scavo said the city is happy to see the project completed and hopes the courts provide another activity for residents and visitors of all ages. Those interested in trying either game can also sign out equipment at Park City Hall or they can bring their own.

“They really are for everyone,” said Scavo. “Yesterday, I saw a grandparent and his young grandson out playing pickleball.”

She went on to reflect on the memories that could be made on the new courts, again praising their accessibility and the community enrichment that they bring.

While pickleball has become an increasingly familiar sight at parks across the country, bocce may require a little more introduction. The traditional Italian game is played by tossing or rolling balls toward a smaller target ball, called a pallino, with players scoring based on whose balls finish closest to the target.

The court area traces its roots to a $26,838 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant announced for Park City in 2022. Original plans called for bocce and basketball facilities, though the city later opted for pickleball in place of basketball after confirming the change was allowable under the grant.

The new spaces join the walking and biking trail, playground and other amenities at Bell’s Tavern Park.
