Gaye Brown with Caverna Independent Schools is organizing an Oct. 23 workshop to help families of students with disabilities prepare for the transition to adulthood. Brown said the Friday event will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and welcome families from Caverna, Barren County and Hart County.

The workshop is intended for parents and families of children with disabilities, including students with individualized education programs or 504 plans. Its focus is life after high school, Brown said during an interview on WCLU’s Coffee and Conversation with Todd Steenbergen.

Brown said families can receive a large amount of information during school planning meetings, making it difficult to absorb or remember everything. The workshop will give them an opportunity to ask questions about services and decisions involved in preparing for adulthood.

Planned topics include guardianship, college accommodations and working while receiving Social Security disability benefits. Brown said representatives from the Hart County attorney’s office are expected to discuss the guardianship process.

South Central Bank will discuss setting up checking or savings accounts, Brown said. Three Corners also plans to participate.

Students will be able to use virtual reality headsets to explore 99 employment opportunities, according to Brown. She said the activity will allow students to learn about jobs while parents have time to ask questions.
