Robert Hanking

Robert Lee Hanking, age 83, of Cave City, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by the comfort of home and the memories of a life well lived. A native of Park City, Kentucky, he was born on July 26, 1943, to the late Harvey and Lois Mae Hanking. He was united in marriage to his best friend and loving wife of sixty years, Shirley Meachum Hanking, who survives.

Robert proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War era, carrying with him the honor of having answered his nation’s call to serve. Throughout his working years, he was employed at R.R. Donnelley before pursuing other opportunities as a life insurance salesman and later delivering the Courier Journal newspaper. Through his years of hard work and dedication, he provided for his family and built a life filled with meaningful relationships and simple pleasures.

Robert found his greatest happiness in the familiar comforts of home and the company of those closest to his heart. He enjoyed cheering on his beloved Kentucky Wildcats, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and snuggling with his cats, who brought him their own special kind of companionship. Whether watching a basketball game, sharing a visit with family, or simply enjoying a quiet moment at home, he treasured the little things that made life meaningful. Above all, the love he shared with Shirley and his family was among his greatest blessings. The memories they created, the moments they shared, and the love that bound them together will forever remain a precious part of his legacy.

Besides his wife, Shirley, he leaves to honor his memory— his daughters, Lisa Bowden (Kevin) of Cookeville, TN and Susan Vaughn of Franklin, KY; his grandchildren, Joshua Bowden (Jennifer), Bryan Bowden, Amber Daniell, Lauren Vincent (Eric), Madison Bowden Carrigan (Keener), Kaide Vaughn and Taigan Vaughn; great-grandchildren, Zaelynn, Westyn and Paityn Vincent; Jackson and Andrew Bowden; Rylan and Annalee Solis Daniel and Wailen Vaughn and sisters-in-law, Wanda Hanking, Elizabeth Tucker and Faye Diggs. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Roland, Charles and James Hanking and niece, Karen Lievers.

The interment will be in Cave City Cemetery with graveside military rights by the Barren County DAV.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Hosparus Health—Barren River, 1320 North Race Street, Glasgow, KY 42141.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026 at Patton Funeral Home Cave City Chapel. Visitation is 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
